The week, starting Monday, October 18, is expected to be fairly lightweight in terms of scheduled economic updates. Nevertheless, trading opportunities are likely to be present, given the sustained volatility in the financial markets. Earnings, on the other hand, gain traction as the season enters into its second week.

On Monday, New Zealand will report its inflation data according to September’s consumer-price index (CPI) data. The report is slated for release at 05:45 pm EST. That said, it will reveal consumer price trends for the third quarter, on a quarterly basis.

On Tuesday, the US reports building permits for September at 08:30 am EST.

On Wednesday, inflation numbers arrive from major economies. In more detail, the UK kicks off with its consumer-price report for September at 02:00 am EST. Next, the European Union will publish its own CPI data for September at 05:00 am EST. Canada follows right after, at 08:30 am EST, with core CPI (excluding food and energy prices).

On Thursday, the US delivers its Existing home sales report for September. Scheduled for 10:00 am EST, the update will highlight the strength of the US housing market.

On Friday, the UK reports retail sales figures for September at 02:00 am EST. Later, at 03:30 am EST, Germany releases its manufacturing PMI numbers for October. In conclusion, Canada delivers its retail sales figures for August at 08:30 am EST.

On the earnings front, the reporting season is getting into its stride this week. Some of the biggest and brightest companies are lined up to report financial results for the quarter ended September.
