Key Takeaways

  • Financial markets are expected to go through a relatively light economic agenda
  • Earnings reports by Coinbase Global, Airbnb, eBay, scheduled for the week

The week starting Monday, August 8, will be relatively light on scheduled economic events. Traders and investors could use the loosened agenda to take stock of the current state of markets and prepare for elevated volatility after the summer season concludes.

Monday does not hold any major economic data that would be of interest to market participants. To kickstart the economic updates for the week, Germany will publish its ZEW Economic Sentiment report for August. The data is expected to arrive on Tuesday, at 05:00 am EST.

On Wednesday, the US will release its CPI report for July, on a monthly basis, at 08:30 am EST.

Attention Shifts to the UK On Thursday

On Thursday, the spotlight would be primarily on the UK as it is set to release its GDP figures at 02:00 am EST. The gross domestic product of the UK will reveal whether the UK economy expanded in the second quarter, both on a quarterly and an annual basis. UK’s manufacturing production report for June will arrive at the same time.

Later, at 08:30 am EST, the US is set to reveal its PPI data, on a monthly basis, for July.

On the corporate earnings front, while the earnings season is drawing to a close, several major companies from around the world are lined up to report second-quarter financials this week.

On Monday, financial results for the quarter ended June will be presented by Saudi-Aramco. On Tuesday, Softbank Corp and Coinbase Global Inc. will release their quarterly earnings statements. Wednesday’s earnings report will come from eBay Inc., Commonwealth Bank Australia Ltd., among others. Thursday brings quarterly statements by Deutsche Telekom AG, Airbnb, and Recruit Holdings, among others.
