The week starting Monday, August 16, is set to be a relatively busy week for traders and investors across the financial markets. From stocks to currencies, major asset classes are likely to be influenced by this week’s global economic reports from central banks and governments.

To kickstart the flurry of economic data this week, the Reserve Bank of Australia will publish its minutes from the latest monetary policy meeting between Reserve Bank Board members. The report, expected to provide insights into the meeting held two weeks ago, is set to be released on Monday, at 09:30 pm EST.

On Tuesday, at 08:30 am EST, the US will release its core retail sales report for July. The figures, which exclude cars, gas, and building materials, will reflect consumer spending for July on a monthly basis. The retail sales report is also slated for release at the same time.

Later in the day, at 01:30 pm EST, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will speak at a virtual event called “Conversation with the Chair: A Virtual Teacher Town Hall Meeting”.

At 10:00 pm EST, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will deliver its interest rate decision, along with a rate statement and a press conference.

Data from US Jobless Claims, Australia Retail Sales

On Wednesday, the UK reports its CPI data for July, on an annual basis, at 02:00 am EST. At 05:00 am EST, the eurozone CPI numbers, also for July and on an annual basis, will be published.

At 08:30 am EST, Canada is expected to release its core CPI figure for July, on a monthly basis.

At 02:00 pm EST, the US Federal Reserve will publish its meeting minutes from the last FOMC meeting. The minutes, published three weeks after the scheduled meeting, will be carefully scrutinized by traders and investors as they will be searching for clues about a potential tapering timeline by the US central bank.

At 09:30 pm EST, Australia will report its employment change for July.

Thursday brings the regular initial jobless claims by the US Labor Department at 08:30 am EST.

Friday starts with the UK’s retail sales data for July, on a monthly basis. The reading is expected to arrive at 02:00 am EST. Canada publishes its core retail sales numbers for June, on a monthly basis, at 08:30 am EST. And Australia reports its retail sales for June, on a monthly basis. The preliminary data is expected at 09:30 pm EST.
